You might remember the much-hyped about "$100 Laptop," an effort by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to develop a low-cost, energy-efficient, and tough-as-nails machine for the more than two billion school-age children living in developing countries, without access to education.
Weighing a mere 3.2 pounds, the spillproof, drop-proof, and fanless XO notebook features a built-in video camera, microphone, memory-card slot, graphics tablets, and gamepad controllers, as well as a screen that pivots into a tablet configuration. One battery charge alone can power six hours of heavy computing, or 24 hours of reading.
While OLPC didn't pare down the cost of production to $100 as it had hoped, the $200 price tag still makes the laptop affordable enough for developing countries to purchase, potentially fulfilling the non-profit's goal of putting a PC into the hands of every child-and making education for the world's children a priority.
Between Nov. 12 and Nov. 26, you'll be able to purchase an XO laptop of your own, while donating one to a child in an impoverished nation-all for $399 and just in time for the holidays. Plus, $200 of your donation is tax-deductible. ::One Laptop Per Child
