Swissbit SwissMemory USB Victorinox data storage device

Date Published: 6/21/06

Swiss Army knives have been known to include everything from scissors to silverware, but with the Swissbit SwissMemory USB Victorinox, you can add one more item to that list: a data storage device. The SwissMemory Victorinox is a fully functional Swiss Army knife with a USB thumb drive built in.

There are various versions of the Victorinox data storage device, but they all include a knife, a nail file, scissors, a pen, a screwdriver, and of course, the USB Flash memory. Swissbit has even planned for users who may want to take their data storage device on a plane. The USB drive can be removed, so you can leave the rest of the device (i.e. the knife and scissors) in your luggage and still bring your data with you.

These data storage devices are available in sizes ranging from 128MB up to 2GB, and we looked at the 512MB version. The larger data storage devices also include white and red LED, so you can use them as a portable flashlight or even a pointing device.

The Victorinox thumb drive isn't just a plain Flash memory chip slapped on for kicks, as it offers additional software tools. There's a password to protect your data, as well as no-trace internet browsing for secure access even on public computers. The data storage device can automatically synch up your internet favorites and documents folder if there have been any changes.

The Victorinox data storage device has a heft similar to a standard Swiss Army knife, so it fits easily in a pocket, and there is also a keychain loop on one end. The USB thumb drive swings out wide enough to connect to most PCs' USB ports, and you can always remove the drive for those hard-to-reach ports.

The 512MB version of the SwissMemory Victorinox retails for $70, but we found some vendors offering it for less than $30 with current rebates and sales. Swissbit includes a 2-year warranty on the device for peace-of-mind protection.

If you're looking for a gift for that person who thinks they have everything, the Swissbit SwissMemory USB Victorinox is a useful and unique data storage device and much more.

Pro: Useful extras, nice set of software features
Con: Bulkier than most USB thumb drives
