How to Deaden Sound on a Computer

More powerful PCs mean more powerful cooling fans, which translates into more noise. All computers and audio/video systems have built in fans that keep the hard drive and the CPU cool. Hard drives also vibrate and can even cause the case to vibrate. The more systems around and the larger the systems, the noisier it will be. Small fans, which are built into computers, must run fast in order to cool down the system. They create a high-pitched noise that can be quite annoying [source: Grossman]. We will now give you some suggestions about what to do to deaden the sound coming from your computer.

  • Install gaskets Installing polymer gaskets around the vibrating fans will reduce the noise. These gaskets are readily available for purchase.
  • Tighten any loose screws Quite often the vibrating sound emanating from your computer is the result of loose fans and motors. This can be remedied by tightening all the screws holding these components in place. Simply shut down and unplug the computer. Remove the cover and tighten all the mounting screws of the hard drive, fans and power supply. Be careful not to over-tighten them.
  • Install heat-sensitive fans Manufacturers usually install inexpensive, noisy fans to cool down the computer's components. These fans spin at the same high speed even when the internal temperature is low. Heat-sensitive fans use thermostats to slow the fan down when the temperature in the box drops. You can usually install these fans without having to remove all the parts inside the case.
  • Install acoustic insulation Acoustic insulation kits are readily available in computer stores. These kits come with layers of special sound absorbing foam that you place inside the computer case. All you have to do is cut the foam to size, peel off the backing and stick it in place. There are even kits available that insulate the hard drive in a sound-deadening box.
  • Upgrade the power supply You can switch your computer's power supply to a power supply that's built to be quieter. This will dramatically reduce your computer's noise. Make sure that you buy a power supply that's suited for your computer [source: Miastowski].
